The Financial Crime Forum is delighted that Sameera Dawood-Bhagwan has agreed to speak at The Financial Crime Forum: Online on 16 March, 2023
Financial Crime Risk and Compliance is complex. There are two discrete aspects: internal compliance i.e. ensuring staff abide by policies and procedures and external compliance i.e. ensuring that the company meets the requirements of both the criminal law and applicable regulations.
These two are not, however, mutually exclusive and The Financial Crime Forum - Enforcing Compliance - will examine both internal and external compliance matters.
Sameera Dawood-Bhagwan oversees a team of 26 which is responsible for the financial crime risk and compliance supervision of banks and life insurance companies, having had a career that takes in various financial crime positions in the banking sector and in the South African Financial Intelligence Unit, The Financial Intelligence Centre.
Nigel Morris-Cotterill, Nigel Morris-Cotterill, Chairman of The FInancial Crime Forum said " Sameera comes from a background outside that of career regulators and has a deep understanding of the effects of external compliance on a financial institution and on how that has a trickle-down effect to internal compliance. As the leader of the supervision section for a regulator in a country with unique challenges, she is well placed to view how different circumstances, even within the same bank, had have an effect on both internal and external compliance.
