Some things are almost beyond belief. 

A surgeon called Neil Hopper, now aged 49, had taken part in hundreds of serious operations including amputations.  In 2019, he repeatedly complained about significant pain in his feet and also claimed he had sepsis - a particularly nasty infection. 

Hopper had a fascination with a particular form of pornography: that of mutilations from which he derived sexual gratification. . He was identified during an investigation, into a dealer called Marius Gustavson who ran a website called EunuchMaker, as a purchaser of videos of mutilations, including voluntary genital removal. He paid only a few pounds for each video, indicating that, to be profitable, many videos would have to be sold. But that's not the fraud. The fraud relates to his actions in using dry ice to damage his otherwise healthy legs so as to  persuade doctors to remove his own legs. He then made insurance claims amounting to almost GBP500.000.

Gustavson was sentenced in his own trial on pornography offences to 22 years in jail. Hopper has been sentenced to two years and eight months for insurance fraud and possessing pornography.
