Increasing international cooperation on online crime - but not all of it.

By News Desk | 9:05 AM UTC, Wed 10 December, 2025

It's starting to look a lot like a cold war: countries are lining up to join a global coalition to combat cyber threats to national security and guess who the first big worry is?

FinCEN's war on "illicit actors" netts USD3.5m

By News Desk | 7:41 AM UTC, Wed 10 December, 2025

Paxful, a convertible virtual currency (CVC), peer-to-peer (P2P) trading platform, facilitated more than USD500 million in suspicious activity involving a host of illicit actors, says FinCEN.

Europol shuts down cryptomixer - and only seizes 25 million euros

By News Desk | 11:13 AM UTC, Mon 08 December, 2025

It should be great news, if there's been an actual offence and identifiable offenders and we must assume that both conditions are true.

But we are consistently told that the amounts of money washing around in crypto defy belief. So 25 m euros doesn't seem very much at all.

Oh, and by the way, it's actually called "CryptoMixer" which is a bit like calling your dog "Dog".

Put risk front and centre, says Germany's BaFin.

By News Desk | 8:33 AM UTC, Wed 03 December, 2025

In a media release referencing a conference paper in German, BaFin, Germany's financial regulator that's more famous for turning a deaf ear to warnings about Wirecard than almost anything else, there's a welcome recognition that when it comes to detecting, deterring and preventing money laundering, risk should be the first priority.

Irish Central Bank fines Coinbase for "AI" set up failures.

By News Desk | 5:00 AM UTC, Wed 03 December, 2025

Coinbase deployed transaction monitoring software but it wasn't set up properly. That administrative failure has resulted in a fine of €21,464,734. Has the industry learned nothing from the Commonwealth Bank of Australia débâcle?

International pressure might be having an effect on Myanmar's fraud factories

By News Desk | 6:05 AM UTC, Mon 24 November, 2025

They call them "scam centres" in the general media but that understates the true nature of the fraud factories in Myanmar and elsewhere. There workers, some voluntary and some forced, work in factory-like conditions, unable to leave their compounds and expected to reach high targets. Across South East Asia, governments, some of whom have their own problems with such places, are pointing to the region where Myanmar borders Thailand and saying that these fraud factories exist because the Myanmar military government, or junta, is benefiting from them. The junta is trying to prove those arguments wrong.

By News Desk | 7:04 AM UTC, Fri 31 October, 2025

Finfluencer? Not exactly. Boxer Manny Pacquiao is not just advertising a new ewallet, it's got his name on it.

LinkedIn says fraud warning "violates community standards".

By News Desk | 6:28 AM UTC, Wed 29 October, 2025

It takes a special kind of stupid to be LinkedIn these days. Insane "trust and safety" rules are so imprecise they are meaningless and infringements, which LinkedIn terms "violations", giving the impression that it's as serious as rape, are policed ex post facto with the imposition of punishments without explanation.

But this week, the removal of a post by Nigel Morris-Cotterill, the first step towards another ban for an unspecified offence, has proved that the entire system is useless and, worse, dangerous.

FATF removes African countries from the Grey List

By News Desk | 10:53 AM UTC, Sat 25 October, 2025

No story here - just a plain notice of something quite unexpected.
