Campaigning group says that Papau New Guinea's central bank Governor was appointed despite an investigation into money laundering

Tuesday, 11 February, 2025 - 01:20

The self-styled Organised Crime, Corruption and Reporting Project says that Elizabeth Genia was appointed as the Governor of the Bank of Papua New Guinea while trying to prevent a money laundering investigation.

In late 2023, Genia was the acting Governor of the Bank when it was raided by the National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate, with Genia being the focus of the investigation, alleges the group.

The allegations are said to be founded in documents filed at court and seen by the Group. The money laundering investigation relates to the deposit of a “significant amount of money from undeclared sources into her… bank account” it is alleged.

It is also alleged that she was investigated in connection with an arrangement to supply weapons to the security staff of the Bank.

Genia has not been charged with any offences but the group has not been able to ascertain the current status of any investigations.

In her position, Genia is to be regarded as a politically exposed person.
