The hidden threat of cannabis

Wednesday, 26 April, 2023 - 10:52

Aranit Lleshi was a cannabis grower. In the great scheme of things, his crop was small, too small to call him a farmer. He didn't work alone and was a member of a criminal gang. But even so, he was murdered because of it.

Lleshi was not the leader of the gang nor even senior. He had arrived in the UK only a short while before his death to join members of his family who had been in the country, legally, for some years.

The other gang didn't grow cannabis: it roamed around the UK stealing crops.

Both gangs were Albania but did not know each other. The Judge in the case concluded that their information on where to find grow houses and the right time to attack could only have come from inside information as Albanian's socialised, even though they may be in competition outside their eents.

Brikel Palaj raided 13 Bloomfield Road and several months later returned with a larger party. It was on that occasion that the murder took place. Bloomfield Road is made up of large semi-detached or detached houses. Severl estate agency chains but typical values at around GBP400,000.

The sequence of events shows that Lleshi and his gang were aware that members of the other gang were setting up in the street. Taking the initiative, they assaulted members of the second group. Things escalated and Lleshi ended up dead.

There was a pitched battle, with weapons, in the street. Two of them left the scene, went to a supermarket, bought knives, removed the packaging in the toilets at the supermarket and then went back ready to engage.

These were not teenage gangs: Radian Lika was 35 years when the fight took place. Brikel Palaj was 32. Nikola Palaj was 28. Kastriot Mhillaj was 34.

The Judge did not order that the defendants be deported at the end of their jail terms.

The violence was begun by the deceased but there was no doubt that both sides were ready and willing to fight, except one, Kastriot Mhillaj, who saw what was happening and ran away, hiding in a nearby petrol station.
