When South Jakarta police started an investigation into an alleged assault they started to look at Mario Dandy Satrio. Twenty year old Satrio is well-known on social media for his flamboyant and extravagant lifestyle. Satrio especially enjoyed showing off his collection of expensive cars and powerful motorbikes.

When the police turned up to arrest him, one of the cars, a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (price Rp 1,73 milliard new, on the road, approx GBP95,000).

So what? Some playboy gets himself into a scrap and the police come to sort it out. This time, it was more than a scrap and the other boy in the fight, who was fifteen years, is currently in intensive car. Again, so what. If a rich kid gets into trouble it's the same all over the world: daddy turns up, smooths things over with the police, offers to cover the medical bills and to pay a bit on top and it all goes away quietly.

Not this time, for Satrio's father isn't supposed to be rich. He's an official in the tax department in Jakarta. IN fact, he was Head of the General Section of the Directorate General of Taxes at the Ministry of Finance, Regional Office of South Jakarta II.

Rafael Alun Trisambodo's first move was to publicly apologise for his son's actions.

But it was no use. Public opinion in Indonesia has been growing more vocal and as the president has publicly stated his opposition to corruption, this has become a subject that Indonesians feel comfortable in criticising.

Trisambodo's assets have been estimated by some commentators as IDR56 milliard.

His wealth was impossible to ignore and he suffered the ignominy of being removed from his post at the order of Sri Mulyani, the Finance Minister. Mulyana was on a roll. He specifically drew attention to the "Blasting club Rijder DGT, " a group of tax officials who ride high-powered motorcycles and raises questions about how they pay for the bikes. But he took the opportunity to take aim at behaviour that gave an adverse perception of the Service : "Although [the bike] was obtained and purchased with halal money and official salary; driving and showing off [the bike] for Tax Officials/Tax Employees and the Ministry of Finance has violated the principles of propriety and public appropriateness. I ask that the BlastingRijder DGT club be dissolved. This injures public trust," he said.

Of course, cynics will say that it draws too much attention to corrupt officials.

Tax cases in Indonesia often show collusion between the government officials and the private sector where bribes are paid to reduce tax bills, anti-corruption campaigners say.

The Minster said that RAT was removed due to a breach of the internal disciplinary code which may mean that he did not accurately complete the statement of assets that all tax officials are required to complete. He also said that there must be an investigation into RAT's wealth. Exactly what that means remains to be seen.
