The telcos began implemented the ban on 1st and 2nd May for personal accounts. However, business users who use short code numbers (e.g. 6xxxx) are, initially, not affected. The ban will be applied in due course.

The ban applies to all SMSs to and from individual accounts.

So while in Malaysia, outgoing SMS containing links will not be sent.

And wherever a Malaysian mobile account holder is in the world, an SMS including a URL will not be delivered.

Also, while in Malaysia, foreign phones will not be able to receive an SMS including a URL.

The system applies only to SMS. It is still possible to send and receive URLs via alternative messaging systems, even those delivered via the Telcos' mobile internet services.

The sending of risky links via SMS is widespread.
