UK's Patent Office releases Manual of Patent Practice

Intellectual property is made up of a number of rights. Unlike copyright, a patent is not automatic. It also has a defined life and it's not very long. There is no global consensus as to what can be the subject of a patent. There is no unified global recognition of patents. Even in the EU, individual countries' patents are not governed by EU Law.

This, in part, explains why so much intellectual property crime takes place.

The Patent Office is clear: this is not a statement of law or even its own practice. It is a guide to making effective applications under sections of the Patents Act 1977 and the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 relating to patents and, where applicable, Supplementary Protection Certificates for Medicinal Products and Plant Protection Products.
