The domain is old - 27 years old, in fact. That might be assumed to give it rather more credibility than it has.

In fact, it's one of a large number of domain names, such as engineer.com, that were registered by mail.com to provide free e-mail addresses to compete with, for example, hotmail. This was not at all uncommon at the time - in fact our own parent company used a white label service to allow use of one of our domain names as a marketing tool.

But today, names such as engineer.com, consultant.com and financier.com are more likely to be used by scammers than by legitimate businesses.

They were not designed to be anonymous: to get a name there, registration was required using an established email address - not the most effective form of identification, one might opine.

During the past year, the website's front page has become a static graphic with the domain name and no reference to the email service.

It came to our attention because an address at financier.com has been used as the reply to address in what appears to be a fraudulent offer of a loan. info.gclservicec@financier.com is a particularly odd e-mail address. Even more odd is that it does not appear in any of the lists of spam e-mails we found.
