Lonely this Christmas
Wright's claims have never been taken seriously by anyone of any credibility in the crypto arena. Earlier this year, a court in London made it clear: his claims were fictitious and if he repeated them he would go to jail for contempt. He repeated them.
He refuses to say exactly where he is but we know that he was at an event in the Philippines in late 2023 for the launch of "Block Dojo" and that he is associated with a company called nChain where he was, at that time, described as that company's chief scientist. He seemed to be making superb connections in the Philippines Government. See https://business.inquirer.net/415437/block-dojo-and-nchain-realise-the-….
It's worth looking up Block Dojo on LinkedIn: it's incorporated in a minor Caribbean jurisdiction, claims to be in London, and has many "people" listed but barely anyone (we found none but we are being cautious) has an actual job there.
Wright was held in contempt. Despite offers to pay his airfare and even to compensate him for loss of earnings (until he came up with a mad figure), he refused to attend court for his contempt hearing. But then he compounded his stance by issuing a fresh set of proceedings. That really annoyed the judge. Those he kept suing were less than impressed, too. So they asked the judge to commit him for 18 months. To be clear, quite serious criminals in the UK don't get anywhere 18 months in jail.
But he continued to make a nuisance of himself. Costs orders racked up in the hundreds of thousands of pounds but he has not paid them.
The judge ordered that if he was ever apprehended he would be committed for 12 months and that if he behaved himself until 20 December 2026 his committal would be discharged. But he still has to pay the costs, some of which are ordered to be part-paid within the next couple of weeks.
He's not wanted by a criminal court so no extradition is possible. But he is subject to a civil court bench warrant which does provide power of arrest.
Wherever he is, if he has any concept of the trouble he's in, he's in a for a lonely and not at all merry Christmas.
